As dusk settled over Dalby Forest, this striking rusty-red vixen emerged on the hunt, moving through the undergrowth with quiet purpose and remarkable grace. The photograph was captured on my ageing Nikon D200, a camera whose shutter seemed loud enough to rouse the entire sleeping forest. Yet the fox remained undeterred.

Alert and intensely focused, she never once lost sight of (me) her observer, keeping a watchful eye as she threaded her way through the woodland shadows. Then, as suddenly as she had appeared, she vanished from view. Moments later, she re-emerged, her mission accomplished, prey clamped firmly between her teeth. It was a fleeting glimpse into the hidden rhythms of the wild… perhaps a meal for herself, or perhaps a hard-earned offering for hungry cubs waiting deeper within the forest.

In the fading light, the encounter felt less like capturing a photograph and more like a privileged window into the untold stories unfolding each evening beneath the forest canopy.
